Sulfates

Found in: Household cleaners, detergents, shampoo, hair care and styling products.

Parabens

Formaldehyde

Found in: Hair straightening or smoothing products that are followed by a heat process can   release formaldehyde gas into the air.
Purpose: Used as a vapor in hair care for smoothing or cleansing properties.
Side Effects: Can cause skin irritation and allergic dermatitis and drying.

• Known carcinogen.
• Can cause serious irritation of eyes, nose and lungs.
• Other medical issues including nervous system issues, respiratory issues and digestive issues.

Phthalates

Found in: Haircare products including shampoos.
Purpose: Used to increase the flexibility of hair styling products “plasticizers”, enhances the the performance of other ingredients in hair care products.
Side Effects: Dangerous to the environment.

Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Polyethylene Glycol (PEGs):

Found in: Antifreeze, Oven cleaners, hair styling and hair cleaning products.
Purpose: Emollients, emulsifiers, act as thickeners in hair care products.
Side Effects: Strip hair of natural moisture.

Benzene:

Purpose: May be a contaminant rather than an ingredient.
